Staff Therapist
Bio
Mia is a NYS licensed, board-certified and registered Creative Arts Therapist. Mia received her master’s degree in Creative Arts Therapy from Hofstra University in 2000. She trained clinically at South Oaks Hospital Center, Brunswick Psychiatric Hospital, St. Francis Hospital (Turning Point), Elmhurst Hospital, and in private practice. Mia has approximately 20 years of therapeutic experience. Mia has worked as an adjunct professor at St. Thomas Aquinas College as well as Molloy College and has lectured at Hofstra University and Touro College campuses.
Mia specializes in adults with anxiety and depressive disorders utilizing a person-centered approach in combination with validation therapy, creative journaling, and a variety of creative arts therapies. Mia couples these modalities with verbal psychotherapeutic processing. One can express emotions through a variety of art materials, while Mia provides support and encouragement promoting healing through verbal and nonverbal means. Through the process of art making one can approach difficult issues and convey a message more quickly, clearly, and safer than with words alone. Mia is looking forward to starting your therapeutic journey together to help you process your past, grapple with problems in your present, and encourage you to move forward in your life.
Mia feels it truly shows a level of strength to admit that one needs help in order to get through life's difficulties. Through a combination of traditional verbal psychotherapy and a variety of creative arts therapies, one can learn how to manage stress, develop healthy coping skills, increase self- esteem and confidence, safely express emotions, and promote self-discovery and exploration through the creative arts. No artistic skill necessary.
